Hand Tied Curly Hair Extensions

Now that youโ€™ve got your

gorgeous new hair extensions,

letโ€™s make sure they stay flawless

with the right aftercare!

Proper aftercare is essential

to maintain their quality, longevity,

and overall health. Follow these

simple steps to maximise the

lifespan of your extensions

and keep them looking as

beautiful as the day they were fitted.

Hair extensions require regular maintenance to keep them looking healthy and nourished. With the right care and upkeep, your extensions can last up to 12-18 months, depending on the type of hair and method used.

  • Regular maintenance is recommended every 6-12 weeks (depending on the method) to reposition the extensions, replace any lost strands, and check the overall condition.

  • Your natural hair will continue to shed daily (as it normally would), but the shed hair remains trapped within the bonds. Maintenance appointments help prevent tangling and keep your natural hair healthy.

  • If you have blonde or heavily processed shades, they require extra care as they are more delicate and prone to dryness. Using recommended colour-safe products is essential to prevent fading and maintain vibrancy.

Washing &

Drying Your Extensions

hair extensions washing tips

Washing Tips:

  • Wait at least 48-72 hours before washing newly fitted keratin bond extensions to allow the bonds to fully set.

  • Wash your hair 2-3 times a week using a sulfate-free, paraben-free shampoo and conditioner to prevent the hair from drying out or the bonds weakening.

  • Always wash your hair in an upright positionโ€”do not tip your head over the bath, as this can cause tangling.

  • When applying conditioner, focus on mid-lengths to ends onlyโ€”avoid the bonds, rings, or tapes to prevent slippage.

  • Rinse thoroughly and gently squeeze out excess waterโ€”do not rub your hair with a towel.

Drying Tips:

  • Always blow-dry your hair on a cool or medium settingโ€”excessive heat can damage the bonds or tapes.

  • Dry the bonds first before the rest of the hair to keep them secure.

  • Never leave your hair damp for long periods, as this can weaken bonds and cause matting.

Brushing Tips

  • Use the right brush โ€“ A soft-bristle brush, loop brush, or wide-tooth comb is best for extensions, as these wonโ€™t pull on the bonds or cause breakage. Avoid using standard brushes with harsh bristles, as they can snag the extensions.

  • Brush gently and often โ€“ At least twice a day, starting from the ends and working your way up to the roots. This prevents unnecessary stress on your natural hair and extensions.

  • Hold the bonds while brushing โ€“ Always support your hair at the root to avoid excessive pulling on the bonds, rings, or tapes.

  • Avoid brushing when wet โ€“ Hair is most fragile when wet, so gently detangle with a wide-tooth comb instead of brushing.

  • Separate the bonds regularly โ€“ Use your fingers to gently separate individual bonds or rings to prevent them from tangling at the roots over time.

Brushing & Styling

Styling Tips

Heat Styling

  • You can curl, straighten, and style your extensions, but always use a heat protectant spray to prevent drying and damage.

  • Keep heat away from the bonds, rings, or tapesโ€”excessive heat can weaken them and cause slippage.

  • Use a low to medium heat settingโ€”too much heat can cause dryness, especially for blonde or processed shades.

Blow-Drying

  • Always dry the bonds first before styling the rest of your hair.

  • Use a cool or medium heat setting to prevent softening of the bonds or tapes over time.

  • Blow-dry section by section to maintain smoothness and reduce tangling.

Sleeping with Extensions

Sleeping with Extensions ๐ŸŒ™

  • Just like your natural hair, extensions need a little TLC before bed. Brushing your extensions before going to sleep is crucial to prevent tangles and matting.

  • Tie your hair in a loose braid or low ponytail before bed to avoid tangling while you sleep.

  • Use a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction and keep hair smooth.

  • A satin or silk hair bonnet protects hair extensions while you sleep, keeping them smooth and tangle-free.

  • Never go to bed with wet hairโ€”always dry it fully to prevent matting.

Learn how to care for hair extensions

Swimming: Chlorine and salt water can dry out and damage extensions, so if you go swimming:

  • Tie your hair in a braid or bun to prevent tangling.

  • Rinse with fresh water immediately after swimming to remove chemicals.

  • Use a leave-in conditioner to keep hair hydrated.

Sun & Heat: UV rays can fade hair colour, especially for blonde shades.

  • Apply a UV protectant spray when spending time in the sun.

  • If using sunbeds, wrap your hair in a towel or scarf to protect it from heat damage.

Exercise, Holidays

& Water Exposure

  • Bonds, rings, or tapes feel loose โ€“ Over time, natural hair growth can cause extensions to shift, making them feel less secure.

  • Tangling or matting at the roots โ€“ If not separated regularly, natural shedding can build up near the bonds, leading to tangling.

  • Extensions feel dry and in need of a deep conditioning treatment โ€“ Regular hydration treatments help maintain the softness and longevity of your extensions.

  • It has been the recommended time between appointments โ€“ Most extension methods require maintenance every 6-12 weeks, depending on the type of extensions and your natural hair growth.

Regular maintenance ensures your extensions stay secure, tangle-free, and looking their best for as long as possible.

Removal & Reuse

When itโ€™s time for a break or a refit, professional removal is essential to prevent damage to your natural hair.

  • If your extensions are still in good condition, I can package them up for safe storage so theyโ€™re ready for your next fitting.

  • Never attempt to remove extensions yourself, as this can cause breakage.
